6:30 PM – 8:30 PM – Hike the Skyline Trail 🕘 2-3 hrs – Hike the Skyline Trail (Cape Breton Highlands National Park)
Once on the path, you can go clockwise or counterclockwise. I chose clockwise (more gradual incline), saving the best for last. About 3 km in, the forest begins to thin, and suddenly — boom — the world opens up. You’re standing on a boardwalk that unfurls like a ribbon across the cliffs. Below you, waves crash against rugged coastlines; above you, the sky feels closer somehow.
This is where you’ll snap the famous Skyline Trail sunset shot (get there an hour before sundown for golden lighting).
• Trail Length: 7.5 km return (easy/moderate hike).
• Photography Highlights:
• Panoramic views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
• Possible moose, bald eagle, and whale sightings.

✅ Puffin Boat Tour – Wildlife photography (puffins, eagles, seals)
✅ Neils Harbour – Coastal scenery & birding
✅Pleasant Bay
✅ Skyline Trail Hike – Iconic views & wildlife photography
✅ Return to Baddeck
Choose your driving direction wisely: If you travel in a clockwise direction, you’ll be on the inside lane as you drive along both coasts, better suited for drivers and passengers who dislike driving next to steep cliffs. Driving counter-clockwise offers better views of the ocean, and since it is less popular, those who don’t like slow traffic might find it preferable.

Tour of Ministers Island Estate, New Brunswick
Welcome to Ministers Island
Ministers Island is a unique historical site near St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, New Brunswick. Accessible only at low tide via a gravel bar road, the island is best known as the summer estate of Sir William Van Horne, the visionary behind the Canadian Pacific Railway. Today, you’ll explore the grand buildings and landscapes that once served as a retreat for one of Canada’s most influential figures.
The Carriage House & Welcome Centre
As you arrive, your first stop is the Carriage House, which now serves as the visitor centre. This striking two-story barn with a gambrel roof was built in the late 19th century to house Van Horne’s prized horses and carriages.
Points of Interest:
• Inside, you’ll find exhibits detailing the history of the island, including Sir William Van Horne’s vision for the estate.
• The Carriage House features original wooden stalls where the horses were kept, along with restored tack and harnesses.
• A small gift shop offers books, souvenirs, and local crafts.
The Main House (Covenhoven)
Walking up the winding path, you approach Covenhoven, the grand 50-room summer home of Van Horne, completed in 1892. The house combines elements of rustic charm and elegant design, reflecting Van Horne’s artistic taste.
Exterior Features:
• The house is built of local sandstone, quarried directly from the island.
• Its wide wraparound verandas offer stunning views of the Bay of Fundy.
Inside Covenhoven: Welcome to Covenhoven: The Grand Summer Home of Sir William Van Horne
Covenhoven is the heart of Ministers Island, a stunning 50-room mansion built in 1892 as a summer retreat for Sir William Van Horne, the driving force behind the Canadian Pacific Railway. This magnificent home reflects Van Horne’s artistic vision, passion for entertaining, and self-sufficient lifestyle. Let’s step inside and explore the key rooms that bring this estate to life.
The Great Hall
As you enter through the grand front doors, you step into the Great Hall, a spacious and inviting room that immediately showcases the home’s grandeur.
Notable Features:
• A massive stone fireplace, constructed from island-quarried sandstone, dominates the room. On chilly evenings, this would have been the gathering place for Van Horne’s esteemed guests.
• A grand staircase made of polished wood leads to the upper floors, featuring intricate hand-carved railings.
• The walls and ceiling are lined with rich wooden paneling, reflecting the craftsmanship of the era.
• An impressive collection of artwork, including paintings by Van Horne himself, is displayed throughout the hall.
The Dining Room
Moving into the Dining Room, you get a sense of the lavish dinners once hosted here.
Highlights:
• The original dining table, where Van Horne entertained railway executives, artists, and dignitaries, remains intact.
• A sideboard and buffet, stocked with fine china and silverware, shows the household’s attention to luxury.
• Large windows flood the room with natural light and offer scenic views of the Bay of Fundy.
• A servant’s door discreetly leads to the kitchen, allowing for seamless dining service.
The Music Room & Library
Adjacent to the dining area is the Music Room and Library, a space designed for leisure and culture.
Features of the Room:
• A grand piano sits in the corner, once played during evening gatherings.
• Van Horne’s personal book collection, including rare texts, lines the wooden bookshelves.
• Comfortable armchairs and a writing desk suggest where Van Horne may have sketched ideas for new railway projects.
The Kitchen & Servants’ Quarters
A stark contrast to the elegant rooms, the kitchen and servant areas showcase the practical side of the estate.
Kitchen Features:
• A large wood-burning stove, still in place, would have been the heart of meal preparation.
• An old-fashioned icebox and pantry storage give insight into food preservation methods before modern refrigeration.
• A dumbwaiter system allowed food to be easily transported between floors.
Servants’ Quarters:
• Modest bedrooms and living areas for the household staff are located near the kitchen.
• The contrast between servant and guest spaces highlights the divide between social classes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Upstairs Rooms & Guest Suites
Venturing upstairs, we find the private living quarters of the Van Horne family and their guests.
Master Bedroom (Van Horne’s Suite):
• A large four-poster bed with intricate wood carvings.
• Personal sketches and paintings by Van Horne hang on the walls.
• A private sitting area overlooks the estate’s gardens and the sea beyond.
Guest Rooms:
• Each guest room is furnished with antique beds, wardrobes, and washbasins.
• Many rooms feature hand-painted floral wallpaper, adding a charming touch.
The Bathhouse & Seawall
Leaving Covenhoven behind, we follow a scenic path down to the shoreline, where one of the estate’s most unique structures awaits—the Bathhouse.
The Exterior:
• This circular stone building is perched on the rocky shore, offering a breathtaking view of the Bay of Fundy.
• The walls are built from local sandstone, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings.
• A set of stone steps leads down to the water’s edge, where Van Horne and his guests would enter the sea for a refreshing swim.
Inside the Bathhouse:
Unlike the main house, the Bathhouse is much simpler in design but still reflects Van Horne’s taste for comfort and practicality.
Key Features:
• Changing Rooms: Small but well-crafted rooms where guests would change into woolen bathing suits before swimming.
• A Central Sitting Area: Equipped with wooden benches and a stone fireplace to provide warmth after a chilly dip in the Bay.
• Windows with Panoramic Views: Strategically placed to let in natural light and offer uninterrupted views of the water.
The Bathhouse was not just a place to change—it was a retreat, allowing guests to relax while enjoying the maritime landscape.
The Farm Complex
Continuing inland, you’ll arrive at the farm buildings, which showcase Van Horne’s passion for agriculture.
Features:
• The Dairy Barns: Originally used for milk and cheese production, these large barns reflect the self-sustaining nature of the estate.
• The Greenhouses: Van Horne grew exotic plants and fruits here, including peaches—an unusual crop for New Brunswick.
• The Windmill & Water System: Ingeniously designed to provide fresh water to the estate, this early example of sustainability highlights Van Horne’s engineering skills.
The Walking Trails & Lookout Points
As you complete your tour, take some time to explore the island’s scenic walking trails.
